70 YEARS AGO SMITH’S CASTLE FIRST OPENED TO THE PUBLIC

On Saturday, May 4, 2019 (10:00 am – 4:00 p.m.) Smith’s Castle invites the community to celebrate the Opening Day of our 2019 season and our 70th anniversary. In 1949, post-war America was being introduced to the wonders of color television and Polaroid cameras, the Volkswagen Beetle and the NBA.  And in North Kingstown the newly formed Cocumscussoc Association, under the leadership of Norman B. Smith and other dedicated Rhode Islanders, had closed on the purchase of Smith’s Castle and adjoining land for $13,000, and was preparing to open Richard Smith’s venerable home to the public for the first time.

A wide variety of activities is being planned for this celebration. Visitors will be able to walk through the historic house where docents in colonial clothing will be ready to answer your questions and to tell you the stories of the people who lived, worked and played at the house over the last 340 years. Others might enjoy strolls in the gardens and our newly-opened trails. Children might enjoy participating in colonial games or crafts. Shoppers can visit the yard sale, gift shop or bake sale. There will be demonstrations both in and outside the house, including but not limited to, hearth cooking and butter-making. The Rhode Island Pirate Players will spin their tales of 17th century New England piracy and fire their black powder muskets. You will hear toe-tapping music by the Old Fiddlers’ Club of Rhode Island and Nancy Carroll of Rhody Voices will charm you with songs of life in colonial Rhode Island. Bring the family; there will be something for everyone! There is no admission charge for Opening Day; however, donations to the Castle would be greatly appreciated.

Visit our website at www.smithscastle.org for updates, directions, or to learn more about Smith’s Castle and our full 2019 schedule of events.  If any of our readers have memories to share of visits to the Castle in the early days or of the people who were so instrumental in saving this Rhode Island treasure, we would love to hear from you.
